Which Literacy Tuition is Best For My Dyslexic Child?

20/7/2023

Picture
Dyslexia is referred to as a Specific Learning Disorder with an impairment in reading in the DSM-5-TR.

It is recommended families look for a specialised literacy tuition program that is designed for dyslexic children. These programs should have trained professionals who understand the needs of dyslexic children and can tailor their teaching methods to meet those needs.

Check for the qualifications and experience of the tutors. Make sure that they have experience working with dyslexic children and have the necessary training and certification to provide effective literacy tuition. Look for programs that offer multisensory teaching methods. Dyslexic children often learn better through hands-on activities, visual aids, and other interactive methods that engage multiple senses.

Consider the location, schedule, and cost of the program. Choose a program that is convenient and affordable for your family. Remember,  what works for one child may not work for another. It may take some trial and error to find the right literacy tuition program for your child.

Evidence-based programs and support for dyslexia:
  • Sounds-write: Sounds-Write is a phonics-based reading program developed by linguists and literacy experts. It is designed to teach children to read and spell through a structured, systematic, and multisensory approach. The program focuses on teaching children the relationship between sounds (phonemes) and letters (graphemes) through the use of carefully structured lessons and activities. https://www.sounds-write.co.uk/
  • Little Learners Love Literacy: Little Learners Love Literacy is a phonics-based reading program that is designed to teach children aged 4-8 years old how to read and write. It was developed by an Australian speech pathologist, Sara Lodge, and is based on research into the most effective teaching methods for early literacy. https://www.littlelearnersloveliteracy.com.au/
  • Five from Five: Five from Five is an evidence-based reading program developed by a coalition of Australian literacy experts. The program consists of five key components that are essential for teaching reading including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. https://fivefromfive.com.au/
  • Decodable readers: Decodable readers are books that are designed to help children learn to read by using phonics skills to decode words. These readers contain words that can be sounded out using the phonetic rules that children have learned, as opposed to sight words or irregular words that must be memorised. https://www.decodablereadersaustralia.com.au/
