“Embarking on the journey of parenthood can be an exciting, joyful and stressful experience all at the same time. I am passionate about working with families right from the moment of conception, through pregnancy and into the post natal period to assist them with managing the stresses and worries that come with navigating this new life role. My aim is support parents in managing a range of issues, including anxiety and depression, adjustment to parenthood, changes to relationship dynamics following the arrival of a baby, and promoting attachment and healthy parent-infant interactions. It is also my aim to support parents in finding enjoyment in their parenting journey, and boosting parental reflective capacity by incorporating mindful parenting strategies and drawing upon a parent’s strengths.
As well as working with parents in the perinatal period, I am also interested in supporting young children and families with managing various challenges they may face, including help with managing big feelings, such as anger or anxiety, navigating friendships and social challenges, building self-confidence, or adjusting to major life changes such as changes in family relationships. I feel strongly that it is important to work closely with parents and caregivers throughout the therapeutic process, to keep them informed about the strategies learned in sessions so that they can assist the child in putting them into practice at home. I approach my work with children in a fun, playful way to promote engagement and build rapport with them so that they feel safe to express their feelings, worries or concerns.
I draw upon several therapeutic interventions depending on the presenting issue, including play based approaches, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) interventions to harnessing unhelpful or distressing thoughts and feelings, social skills training, and mindfulness/relaxation strategies.
I have previous experience in working with children, adolescents and families across a range of settings- providing play based therapy and counselling for children/families in the out of home care sector and in private practice, parenting support in a community health setting, and facilitating groups focusing on fostering healthy parent-infant interactions and attachment through play."
