I have a particular interest in working with young children with autism and their families to enhance their quality of life through providing evidenced based intervention that improves their capacity to socialise, communicate and function independently. I draw on the principals of Positive Behaviour Support to provide guidance in managing challenging behaviour and teaching more appropriate alternative behaviours.
Children learn and develop in the context of their families; I therefore aim to involve parents collaboratively in therapy and intervention and encourage them to utilise their strengths to build their confidence in regards to their own capacity to support their child.
I have experience in specialist and mainstream schools and the private practice setting providing counselling, assessments and group programs for children and adolescents presenting with various social, emotional and educational challenges. I have also worked in the community sector within a not-for-profit organisation providing support to individuals on the autism spectrum.
I believe the role of a psychologist working with children and adolescents is to offer guidance and insight and to empower young people and those who support them. I pride myself on establishing a strong rapport with each of my clients and consider this to be the foundation to any successful therapeutic relationship. I am compassionate, sensitive and display a sincere regard for all clients and their families. My goal is to provide a safe and engaging space in which clients feel comfortable to express themselves and engage in therapy.
I work predominantly from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy framework and will draw on other evidence-based treatments such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Solution-Focussed Brief Therapy as necessary to suit the needs of each individual.
