Your couples counsellor is more of a facilitator of discussions for you to have with your partner or co-parent in a safe place and isn’t there to judge, diagnose or take-sides. Doesn’t matter if you’ve been together for a few months or a few decades, or if you are separated or divorced.
And no, you’re not too young to have couples counseling, it really does teach you:

Working together to improve your relationship, also improves your life, and if you’re a parent, of course helps your children! Speaking of kids, if you and your partner or co-parent are thriving, so are your kids. So if anything, do it for them.
Still feeling a bit hesitant? Some hesitation from one partner in the duo is totally normal! My advice? Just try 2-3 sessions, see how you go. Still not into it? We can go from there. “If you can relate to any of the above, and are finally ready to get some relief from the exhaustion of feeling this way, then we invite you to make an appointment. No matter where you are in Australia, we can help you as we can deliver counselling via telehealth” (H&H website) |
To attend couples counselling, you do not need a GP referral as payment is made privately. There are no Medicare rebates for couples counselling. Peta, our couples counsellor, has experience working with young couples and expecting and current parents. She is registered with The Australian Counselling Association and is an AHPRA-registered Provisional Psychologist. Peta uses skills from Gottman Couples Therapy along with Emotion-focused therapy and attachment based therapy when working with couples and co-parents. |
