If your child flaps their hands when they're excited, rocks while concentrating, hums when they're overwhelmed, or paces while thinking, you are seeing their nervous system doing what it needs to do.
This behaviour is known as stimming, short for self-stimulatory behaviour. For many neurodivergent children, including autistic children and children with ADHD or sensory processing differences, stimming is an important way of regulating emotions, processing sensory information, and expressing themselves. While stimming was once commonly discouraged, our understanding has changed considerably. We now know that, in most cases, stimming is a healthy and adaptive form of self-regulation. Rather than asking how to stop stimming, it can be more helpful to ask what purpose it is serving for the child. What Is Stimming? Stimming can look different from one person to another. Some common examples include:
Many people stim. Tapping your foot during a meeting, twirling your hair while thinking, clicking a pen, or bouncing your leg are all common examples. For neurodivergent people, stimming is often more noticeable because it plays a much bigger role in helping them regulate throughout the day. Why Do Children Stim? Stimming is not random. It serves important functions for the nervous system. Emotional regulation Children often stim when they are experiencing strong emotions. Excitement, anxiety, frustration, anticipation, and joy can all lead to increased stimming. The repetitive movement or sound helps their body manage those feelings. Sensory regulation Some children stim because their environment feels overwhelming. Others stim because they are seeking additional sensory input. In both cases, stimming helps the nervous system move towards a more comfortable and regulated state. Focus and concentration Many children find repetitive movement helps them concentrate. Rocking, pacing, or using a fidget can actually improve attention by helping the brain regulate competing sensory information. Communication and self-expression Stimming can also communicate how a child is feeling. An increase in stimming may indicate excitement, stress, uncertainty, or sensory overload. Rather than viewing stimming as a behaviour to eliminate, it can be helpful to see it as valuable information about what a child is experiencing. How Parents and Educators Can Help Start with curiosity Instead of asking: "How do I stop this?" consider asking: "What is my child's body trying to communicate?" This shift encourages understanding rather than correction. Support sensory needs Children regulate more effectively when their sensory needs are respected. This might include access to:
Supporting sensory regulation often reduces stress rather than increasing it. Redirect only when safety is involved Most forms of stimming are harmless and do not need to be stopped. However, if a child is hurting themselves or others, it is appropriate to help them find a safer way to meet the same sensory need. For example, a child who bites themselves when overwhelmed may benefit from chewable sensory tools or activities that provide deep pressure. The goal is not to eliminate the need for regulation but to support it safely. Model acceptance Children notice how adults respond to their differences. Comments such as: "I can see your body is helping you feel calm." or "It's okay if this movement helps you." send a powerful message that their ways of regulating are accepted rather than judged. Let stimming guide your understanding Changes in stimming can provide useful information. An increase may suggest a child is overwhelmed, excited, anxious, or fatigued. Paying attention to these patterns can help parents and educators adjust the environment or provide support before distress escalates.
